The months leading up to the new translation of the Mass last year saw an explosion of commentary from Catholics every-where. Magazines, newspapers, and blogs were filled with people saying all sorts of things, both positive and negative, about the translation.

In one sense, this should come as no surprise. There have always been vigorous debates and powerful disagreements in the church. We only have to remember Paul’s argument with Barnabas in Acts 15, or the way that St. Augustine and St. Jerome fought over Scripture and its interpretation in the fourth century. Catholics should always feel free to express their opinions—and even disagree—as long as we all stay within the boundaries of the teachings of the church and try our best to fulfill God’s mission for the church.

But sometimes our differences and disagreements turn sour. Sometimes we lose our way by allowing the issues to become more important than one another. This is something we should all be careful about. For the moment we forget that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ is the moment when…
