Scripture tells us that “by wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches” (Proverbs 24:3-4).

This is what the Holy Spirit wants to do in all of us as we learn the art—and the blessings—of worship.

Entering into worship requires us to step back from the cares and responsibilities of the world so we can quiet our minds. So as you start your prayer, imagine yourself leaving the world behind you and passing through a large gate that leads to heaven’s courtyard. Imagine yourself entering this gate with thanksgiving and coming into this courtyard with praise (Psalm 100:4).

Dwell on the ”Great Things” of God. One of the best ways to experience the Spirit’s blessings that come from worship is to dwell on the great things that God has done. You may want to focus on the beauty and perfection of creation, on your own personal blessings, or on Jesus himself.

Your worship can also be enlivened as you meditate on Scripture. Read a parable or a miracle story or a description of the New Jerusalem. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you grasp the love of Jesus or the wisdom of the Father.

Walking through the Stations of the Cross or praying the rosary is another way to contemplate the mysteries of Jesus. It also gives you the added benefit of praising God with your heart, your mind, and your body.

The Action of the Holy Spirit. Every day, try to set aside a few moments just for Jesus. Follow some of the suggestions above and see what the Holy Spirit says to you and does in your heart. Then, when you have finished, write down what you sensed. It may seem that your journal entry came from your mind, but don’t rule out the possibility that the Holy Spirit was at work as well.

As you meditate on the greatness of God, it may feel like it is mostly your effort. But in time, you will begin to notice a change. You may feel a greater love for God or for your family. You may find yourself becoming more patient or more generous. You may want to spend more time in prayer or Scripture.

As this happens, it’s because what began as eighty percent your effort and twenty percent reliance upon God’s grace shifted to become more like eighty percent God’s work in you and twenty percent your effort. And that means that you are striving less and receiving more!
